Hip Anatomy

The hip is a well contained ball and socket joint between the head of the femur, and the acetabulum of the pelvis. The joint is lined by articular cartilage that provides a smooth surface for motion to take place. It takes major forces such as motor vehicle accidents to dislocate this joint. It is a very common joint to develop degenerative arthritis, which is the insidious onset of thinning of the articular cartilage. It is usually manifest by pain, stiffness, loss of rotation, and eventually a conspicuous limp. Treatments in the early stages can include weight control, exercise, nutritional supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, medications and injections. It is important to rule out other causes of hip pain such as referred pain from back problems as well.
